The 1st Annual Dulles International Scholastic Championship

Crowne Plaza Dulles Airport Hotel Herndon

2200 Centreville Road, Herndon, VA 20170

March 3, 2023 at 10 am

We have two scholastic tournaments on March 3rd: the main-event championship tournament at 10 am and a scholastic quads tournament at 4 pm. You can indicate whether you are registering for both tournaments, just the championship, or just the quads by selecting from the section choices.

Dulles International Scholastic Championship: Tournament Information

  • Four rounds: first round at 10 am, subsequent rounds occur as soon as possible

  • Four sections: K-12, K-8, K-5, and K-3

  • Time control: Game in 25 minutes with a 5-second delay (US Chess regular and quick rated)

  • Entry fee: $45 by 3/2, $50 on 3/3 (on-site registration closes 30 minutes before round 1)

    • We also have a scholastic quads side event at 4 pm (see below). If playing both events, the quads will only be $20, regardless of registration date. Otherwise the entry fee for the quads is $40 by 3/2, $45 on 3/3.

  • Masks are optional

  • Boards and pieces will be provided for all players, but we don’t have enough clocks for everyone (those who have clocks are welcome to bring them)

  • This tournament is US Chess rated, so an active US Chess membership is required. Click here to join the US Chess Federation for the first time or to renew an inactive membership: https://new.uschess.org/user/login?destination=/form/membership

  • Don’t hesitate to reach out to us at josh@dmvchess.com with any questions

Venue Information/Logistics

  • PARKING: The hotel has free parking.
  • Free water will be provided for attendees.
  • There is no scheduled lunch break, but there is almost always time for players to have food between games. There aren't any scheduled round times--rounds will occur as soon as possible.

Scholastic Quads Event

At 4 pm we also have a scholastic quads tournament. Players may choose to play in just the championship at 10 am, play only the quads at 4 pm, or play both events. Players who play in both events will receive a discounted entry into the quads. If playing both events, the quads will only be $20, regardless of registration date. Otherwise the entry fee for the quads is $40 by 3/2, $45 on 3/3.

A quad is a four-person round robin section in which all participants play each other once (three rounds). Our quads are open to all scholastic players in grades K-12, and each quad will be divided based on rating rather than grade. The advantage of quads is that players get the chance to compete against opponents with close USCF ratings. The tournament director has discretion when determining quad seeding (for example, the TD may use a player's unpublished rating). Depending on the exact number of registrations, the bottom section may have five, six, or seven players, in which case that section will be paired as a Swiss tournament.
