  • Five-round Swiss; three-day and two-day schedules (Premier Section must play three-day schedule); up to two half-point byes allowed

    • Three-day schedule: Friday at 7 pm, Saturday at 12:00 noon, Saturday at 5 pm, Sunday at 11 am, Sunday at 4 pm

    • Two-day schedule: Round 1 on Saturday at 9:30 am, merge with 3-day schedule for round 2

  • On-site registration closes 30 minutes before the start of round one (after that players may register with a half-point bye)

  • Five sections: Premier (FIDE-rated), Under 1900, Under 1600, Under 1300, and Under 1000

    • Players may not play up more than 200 points without special permission from the tournament director. Special permission will only be granted for very good reasons (e.g. to maintain an even number of players or if the player has a high foreign rating). A player may use their live rating or published rating to qualify for a higher section.

  • $5,500 guaranteed prize fund:

    • Premier: $1300 for 1st, $550 for 2nd, $300 for 3rd

    • U1900: $1000 for 1st, $400 for 2nd, $100 for 3rd

    • U1600: $550 for 1st, $250 for 2nd, $100 for 3rd

    • U1300: $350 for 1st, $150 for 2nd

    • U1000: $300 for 1st, $150 for 2nd

  • Time control: Game in 90 minutes with a 30-second increment

    • (Game/45;+10 for round one of the two-day schedule)

    • NEW POLICY: 30-minute forfeit time. If you do not arrive at the board within 30 minutes of the scheduled round time your opponent can claim a forfeit win. The tournament director may choose to pair the opponents of absent players against each other rather than award a forfeit win.

  • Entry fee: $97 by 7/3, $110 by 7/5, $120 by 7/6, $130 on/after 7/7 (on-site registration closes 30 minutes before round 1)

    • Free entry to GMs and IMs ($97 deducted from prizes)

    • Re-entries are permitted in all sections besides Premier--the price to re-enter is $50.

  • Masks are optional. Spectators are welcome.

  • Boards and pieces will be provided for all players, but please bring a clock if you have one.

  • All sections are USCF-rated. The premier section is also FIDE-rated.

  • Hotel Reservations: To reserve a sleeping room at the chess rate of $105 plus taxes and fees, call 703-471-7411 and mention DMV Chess. The hotel may stop accepting sleeping rooms under the chess rate at any time due to limited availability.

Free Saturday Night Action!

We have a free action tournament on Saturday night (July 8) at 8 pm. This tournament is free for anyone playing in the main event. There will be four rounds. Players can play one, two, three, or four games depending on when their Saturday-night game ends.

If not playing in the main event, you can still participate in the Saturday-night action, although you must pay an entry fee.
