Start Time:  1:00pm   (4 Round Swiss tournament is expected to go until approximately 5:15pm; one half-point bye is available - please see below)

  • 4 Rounds of USCF rated chess in Swiss System format (4SS). USCF membership required prior to registering for tournament ($20 per one year at  
  • Eligibility:  Scholastic tournament for kids (Grades K-12). 
  • Three Sections:  Open (K-12) Section;  Intermediate (K-6) Section; and Primary (K-3) Section.   Players must sign up for a section that includes their grade in school (i.e. it is possible to play up, but not down to a section that does not include player's grade). To play up into Open section a K-6th grader must have a rating of 1000 or more.  A small section may be combined with another section for pairing purposes.  If that is the case, prizes will still be distributed according to the section in which each player registered. 
  • Time Control: G/25, d5  (Dual Rated:  USCF Regular and Quick rated).  Each player has 25 minutes to make their moves in a game; each turn there is a 5 second delay before clock resumes counting down).  Players may bring snacks, which can be eaten in the kitchen between rounds.   Limited drink and snack options are available in the kitchen for $1.  Players may have a water bottle or other drink but no food is allowed in the playing area. Players should expect one or more of their games to finish early and should bring a book or quiet entertainment to occupy themselves before the next round begins.
  • Entry fees: $25-40.  Discounts for early entry and Hamden Chess Club members.  Early entry discounted fee deadline: Thursday, Midnight;  Regular Entry deadline: Saturday, 11:00am (day of tournament).
  • PRIZES:  Nine Trophies (Trophies for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each section (Open K-12; K-6; K-3)  and chess medals for all other players.  Note: USCF tie-breaks will be used if necessary to determine trophy recipients (i.e. if after four rounds top players in a section have earned the same total number of points, the pairing software will determine place winners based on prescribed USCF tie-break methods).
  • Byes: One half-point bye may be taken for any round that you cannot attend. Must be requested at least one hour prior to start of tournament.
  • Chess sets and clocks will be provided.
  • No spectators will be allowed while tournament games are being played.   Standings will be posted between rounds and available at Parents and others may wish to visit and support local organizations such as the adjacent bookstore/coffee shop and restaurants.
  • Any cell phones must be turned off.  Electronic notation devices will not be allowed for this tournament.  Students should plan to notate the moves in their games. Students in lower grades should try their best to notate but will not be required to do so.

Refunds:  Refunds and transfers must be requested at least 24 hours before the tournament. The amount of the entry fee, less $10 cancellation fee, will be refunded.  Alternatively, the entry fee and tournament registration can be transferred to a tournament in the following month without penalty if requested at least 24 hours before the tournament.
