2025 Sioux Falls City Chess Championship

Dates: March 29-30

Event Site: HyVee Grocery Store--3000 S Minnesota Ave., Sioux Falls, SD

Requirements:  Membership in both the United States Chess Federation and South Dakota State Chess Association (membership registrations available at site) is required to play in tournament. Annual SDCA membership fee is $10 for juniors, $15 for adults and $20 for families. Please make sure membership fees for SDCA and USCF are paid in full prior to the tournament beginning. SDCA fees may be paid at https://sdchess.org/join/ at the tournament site. USCF fees may be paid at https://new.uschess.org/. If USCF fees show unpaid at the time of tournament, the TD reserves the right to collect an additional $15 fee for tournament reporting. 

Registration: Registration is available immediately via email or in person starting at 7:30 AM at the event site. 

Payment and Fees: Fees--$35 if registered by 3/22, $40 if registered between 3/23 and 3/28, $45 if registered at the tournament site on 3/29. Payment may be made at the tournament site, online via Caissa (if available) or online at SDChess.org via PayPal or SquarePay.

Time Controls: game in 90 minutes/30 sec increments.

Byes: Two byes (1/2 point) will be granted if requested at least one day prior to the day(s) of the match(s).

Prizes: Prizes: 1st-$100, 2cd-$50, 3rd-$25, 1st Scholastic-$50, U2000-$50, U1800-$50, U1600-$50, U1400-$50, U1200-$25 and Unrated-$25 (Prize money assumes 42 tournament players). Trophies will be given to the top three Open finishers, the top Scholastic player as well as to both the top scoring Open and Scholastic individuals that are also Sioux Falls residents. Along with trophies, those two top scoring Sioux Falls residents will also be respectively bestowed with the titles of “Sioux Falls City Champion” and “Sioux Falls Scholastic City Champion”. Trophies will also be given to the highest scoring individual in each bracket. In case of ties the prize money will be divided but the trophy will be decided by use of a tie-break rule established by Caissa software, which follows USCF Standard Tiebreak Systems. If Caissa software does not list a clear winner, determination of trophies and awards will be determined by the tournament director.

State Grand Prix Points: SD residents that compete in this tournament have the opportunity to earn state grand prix points to qualify for the SD State Closed Championship. These are not USCF grand prix points and only apply to qualifying for the final six-player SD State Closed Tournament Championship section. More details will soon be available.

Additional Rules and Notes: Cellular phones and electronic devices are prohibited from use during the chess match. Please turn off all cellular phones and place in the center of the table (face-down) during tournament play. Other USCF rules will be followed during the tournament.
Equipment: Please bring chess sets and clocks.
