Emerald Hills Chess, Tri-Valley Chess League and the Valley View Elementary PTA invite you to the First Annual Pleasanton Youth Chess Open on Sunday April 21st, 2024.

The tournament is open to all K-12 players THROUGHOUT NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AND BEYOND, including:

  • unrated novices
  • members of after-school chess clubs
  • online players trying their first in-person tournament
  • and of course experienced USCF-rated competitors!

Individual player scores will also be tallied to determine the best school teams in Pleasanton!

Economical to enter, with more than 30 trophies for top finishers by section, grade and rating!

When: Sunday, April 21st 1-5 PM

Where: Valley View Elementary MPR, 480 Adams Way, Pleasanton (see map)

Rounds: 4 (players should expect to play ALL games unless they request a bye in registration or from a tournament director before round 2)

Sections:

1) K-3 Challenger (unrated)

Who: First-time and newer tournament players (NO geographic restriction, max US Chess 300 rating) 

Cost: $10

2) Gr 4-12 Challenger (unrated)

Who: First-time and newer tournament players (NO geographic restriction, max US Chess 300 rating) 

Cost: $10

3) Premier (rated)

Who: Experienced USCF players (no geographic restriction) up to 700 rating

Cost: $15 (valid USCF membership required - check here)

4) Championship (rated)

Who: Players above 700 rating from anywhere in Northern California and beyond

Tournament is open to ALL K-12 players throughout NorCal and beyond.

Trophies: At least 40, incl. - Top 5 in Championship and Premier and Top 8 in Challenger, Top 4 Under 1000 (Championship), Top 4 Under 500/Unrated (Premier), Top 2 K-5 in Championship and Premier, Top K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 in Challenger, and anyone else scoring 2.5 or more.  

Players from Valley View and Wells Middle School in Dublin competing in the rated Premier and Championship sections can get a new $20 USCF junior membership for free. 

The tournament is a no-elimination 4 round tournament. Players will be paired against players of similar scores each round. They should expect to play ALL four games.

If you have a schedule conflict, you may request up to one half-point bye when registering or by contacting the TD before the start of round 2; additional byes will be zero points. Byes do NOT affect a player's USCF rating.

Players may bring smartphones and tablets, but they must be hidden inside a closed bag and turned off during their games.

US Chess Federation tournament rules around touch move, announcing check, talking with opponents, etc. will apply to rated and unrated sections.

These rules will be shared in the emailed orientation before the tournament and also by the Tournament Director before the first round.

Emerald Hills Chess provides professionally-led chess clubs serving 250+ kids in seven locations around the Tri-Valley, including five Pleasanton elementary schools (Valley View, Hearst, Mohr, Fairlands, and Donlon) and small group tournament training classes in Dublin.

The Tri-Valley Chess League is a student-led non-profit that also holds free chess classes in Pleasanton.
