8th Annual Fallon/Dublin Scholastic Championships

The Tri-Valley's most-popular youth chess tournament returns for its 8th year! The Dublin Scholastic Chess Championship, organized by the state and national (online) champions, Fallon Chess Club, will come back to the Fallon MPR on Sat. Sept. 9th. 

The tournament draws 150 players every year. This year, there will be 40+ trophies for top finishers over four sections, from the advanced Championship to unrated Challenger sections for new tournament players.

The tournament is also a mandatory tryout for new players wishing to join the Thursday after-school enrichment club, Fallon Chess. 

Date: Saturday, September 9 

Time: 8:30 AM - 4 PM (unrated sections 11 AM - 4 PM), followed by awards ceremony

Location: Multi-Purpose Room (MPR), Fallon Middle School, 3601 Kohnen Way, Dublin

Cost: Rated Championship and Premier sections - $25; Unrated Challenger sections - $15; for late on-site regstration please arrive 45 min before your section begins; Current USCF junior $20 membership required for rated sections - renew with us or at USChess.org

5 Round Championship

Rating: USCF 800+; lower-rated players may play up

Time Control: Game in 30 min with 5 second delay

Round Times: Round 1 - 9 am; Round 2 - 10:30 am; Lunch break; Round 3 - 12:30 pm; Round 4 - 1:45 pm; Round 5 - 3:00 pm

Prizes: Top 5 and Top 2 U1200, U1000, U800/Unrated

5 Round Premier

Rating: Below USCF 800 (Unrateds ok)

Time Control: Game in 30 min with 5 second delay

Round Times: Round 1 - 9 am; Round 2 - 10:30 am; Lunch break; Round 3 - 12:30 pm; Round 4 - 1:45 pm; Round 5 - 3:00 pm

Prizes: Top 5 and Top 2 U600, U400, U200/Unrated

Unrated Challenger (Grade 4+)

Rating: U500 rated or unrated players 

Round Times: Round 1 - 11 am; Round 2 - 12 pm; Lunch break; Round 3 - 1 pm; Round 4 - 2 pm; Round 5 - 3 pm

Prizes: Top 8, Top 2 Elem

Unrated Challenger (K-3)

Rating: Unrated players 

Round Times: Round 1 - 11 am; Round 2 - 12 pm; Lunch break; Round 3 - 1 pm; Round 4 - 2 pm; Round 5 - 3 pm

Prizes: Top 8, Top 2 Gr 1/K

Notes: 1) Please arrive 30 minutes before your first round; 2) Players are meant to play ALL rounds; 3) If a player has a time conflict, they can request a bye in advance. One 1/2 point bye maximum; additional are 0 point byes which do not count towards player ratings; 4) players using online ratings to choose sections should subtract 1-200 points. Example: Player with 1000 Chess.com Rapid rating = 800-900 USCF rating and can choose to play in either Championship or Premier sections.

Fallon Chess Club Enrollment

New prospective members are invited to Fallon Chess Club on the basis of chess rating and/or their performance in this tournament (especially if they lack a chess rating). Students whose parents can volunteer as a classroom monitor on Thursday afternoons 3:30-5 pm are automatically admitted.
